About Cinnaminson Township

Cinnaminson was carved out of Chester Township, now Maple Shade Township, in 1860, after residents there decided the township had grown too large for its inhabitants to meet together conveniently. The name is generally traced to the Lenape word “Senamensing,” meaning sweet water, though some accounts instead link it to a phrase describing a stone island. Once established, Cinnaminson itself gave up land three more times over the following decades, losing territory to form Delran Township in 1880, Riverton in 1893, and Palmyra in 1894.

Sitting along the Delaware River east of Philadelphia, the township is also home to one of only four points in New Jersey where the 75th meridian west crosses the 40th parallel north, a coordinate that happens to fall on the fairway of the Riverton Country Club golf course. That club, designed by golf architect Donald Ross, has operated continuously since 1900, and the Burlington County Footlighters community theater has performed in the township since 1938.
